The United Nations General Assembly has passed
a resolution that aims to establish a global treaty to tackle cybercrimes.
The resolution passed with a vote of 79 to 60 with 33 countries abstaining.
The Russian-led initiative would set up an expert committee representing all areas of
the world to create a convention on countering the use of ICT for criminal purposes.
This has been met by objections from the European Union and the United States,… which say
there is no need to create a fresh treaty,… and that the move would only undermine ongoing
efforts to combat cybercrime. Under the resolution,… the envisioned committee
would convene in August 2020,… to draft an outline of its activities.
